This course offers insight into the Karatsu ceramic tradition – an approach defined by reduction, material sensitivity, and craftsmanship. It’s not only about technique, but also about attitude: How can everyday ceramics be made functional while reflecting cultural context and place?
Techniques Taught
Karatsu potter Michael Martino will teach both wheel-throwing and handbuilding techniques, including coil and paddle work. Participants will create classic Karatsu forms traditionally used for serving food – from rice bowls to platters.
The focus lies on making functional tableware that works in daily life: with minimal trimming, clear design, and efficient use of materials.
Approach
The course combines demonstrations with hands-on work. Michael will guide participants through the process and offer individual feedback. The practical part is complemented by visual materials: historical references, photos from Japanese studios, and contemporary Karatsu pieces.
About the Artist
Michael Martino has lived in Japan for over 20 years and has run his own studio in Saga Prefecture since 2007. He trained under experienced Karatsu potter Tsuruta Yoshihisa and built his own anagama wood kiln in 2011. His work is made exclusively from local materials – functional, understated, and rooted in place.
