In this three-part special course, we'll explore the subtle art of painting over glaze—a technique known as overglaze painting . We won't work with slip or directly on the clay. Instead, we'll paint on the glazed surface—just before the final firing.
This method has a long history. Even before white porcelain was widely available, artists found ways to bring clarity and detail to ceramics – by illustrating them on the glaze. A raw-fired piece, a bath in white glaze, a steady brushstroke – and a second firing that ties everything together.
Even today we use this technique when things need to be finer, more precise, more delicate.
What we will do together
You develop your own sketches – with the support of a professional illustrator
You design small test tiles to see how the technology behaves after firing
You form your own ceramic picture supports – tiles, plates or flat shapes, also ideal for wall objects
In the last session we transfer your finished drawings directly onto the glaze
We'll fire it for you. After about three weeks, your pieces will be ready to hold, hang, or give as a gift.
