A teapot is more than just a vessel: it is a small daily ritual. And one that you have made yourself carries something more: the knowledge of every single decision that went into creating it.

In this multi-day course, we will explore the art of creating your own wheel-thrown teapot. From the first shape to the finished piece, you will learn how the individual components are made and how several thrown parts come together to form a functional teapot.

This course is designed for anyone who already has experience with the pottery wheel and would like to deepen their skills. Together, we will explore different approaches to designing teapots and then bring your own ideas to life in clay.

What to expect

In this course, you will learn about the construction and making process of a wheel-thrown teapot. We will work through each individual component: the body, lid, spout, handle, and built-in strainer, while focusing on how these elements are harmoniously connected.

Alongside the practical work at the wheel, you will gain insights into teapot design, functionality, and the basics of glaze chemistry.

After three course sessions, you will have created a teapot that you can truly use.

Course schedule

Day 1: Finding forms and throwing

We begin by looking at different teapots and exploring their unique characteristics. We will examine the individual components and discuss shapes, proportions, and design possibilities.

Afterwards, we move to the pottery wheel: you will throw the body of your teapot, as well as the lid and spout as the foundation of your own vessel.

Day 2: Assembly and details

On the second course day, we focus on the details that turn a vessel into a true teapot. You will pull a suitable handle, trim your pieces from the first session, and cut a strainer into the body of the teapot. Afterwards, all individual parts will be carefully assembled and your teapot will take its final shape.

Day 3: Glazing and glaze knowledge

Glazing a teapot comes with its own particular challenges. During this two-hour session, we will glaze your finished teapot and take a deeper look into the theory of glazes and their chemical foundations. You will learn how glazes interact and how they influence the appearance and functionality of your piece.

Your finished piece

You will create your own hand-thrown teapot — a unique, individual piece made from several carefully crafted components. You can take home one finished teapot. After the glaze firing, your pieces will be ready for everyday use.
