In this course, children discover how a lump of clay turns into finished ceramics. We start by looking at where clay comes from and why it can be shaped at all. Then we try out different techniques and make figures and vessels, from cups to vases. Every child makes their own pieces from start to finish, from the first shaping to the colourful glaze.

Practice makes perfect. Twelve weekly classes give children plenty of time to grow confident, both building by hand and working on the pottery wheel. By the end, there might be a cup they drink from every day, or a figure unlike anything else in the world. With clay, almost anything is possible.

Clay engages all the senses. Kneading and shaping it quietly trains fine motor skills. The wheel asks for patience, and not everything works the first time. That's a good thing: children learn to keep going, and a piece that didn't work out simply becomes a lump of clay again. At the end, they take home something they made themselves.

How the course works
After an introduction to the material, the children learn simple basic techniques. They start with figures and move on to vessels, either built by hand or thrown on the wheel. Finally, we focus on the surface: the pieces are painted with coloured slips and then glazed.

The price includes 4 kg of clay per child as well as bisque and glaze firing.

Good to know
The course is suitable for children aged 7 and up, no previous experience needed. There's nothing to bring, just clothes that can get dusty. We provide aprons, and clay washes out easily. The course is taught in German.

The course runs with a minimum of five participants. If it doesn't take place, we'll gladly move your booking or give you a full refund.

Cancellations
Places are limited, so please let us know in good time if you can't come. That way someone else can take the spot. You can cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the course starts. After that, the full course fee applies, and the same goes if a child doesn't show up without cancelling.

Your teachers
The course is led by experienced ceramicists from rami ceramics. They have worked on the wheel and with handbuilding techniques for many years and care about stable forms and ceramics that work in everyday life. Alongside the basics, they share insights into their own way of working and practical tips that stay useful long after the course.
