DEVELOPING GLAZES
Sunday 2-5 PM (August 23, August 30, September 06, September 13)
Overview
In this 4-week course, we dive into the world of ceramic glazes. You will learn how glazes are structured, how raw materials interact, and how to systematically develop your own glazes. You will learn to understand the structure and effect of ceramic glazes and will be able to take documented glazes with you at the end of the course.
We work with basic recipes and test color additives like metal oxides and stains. Through observation, comparison, and documentation, you will gradually develop your own understanding of glaze development.
At the end of the course, you will have developed and documented your own glaze variations – and will take selected mixtures and recipes home with you.

About Jacob Bartmann
Jacob Bartmann is a visual artist who lives and works in Vienna. His work focuses on invisibilities and the relationships to and between material actors. His craft training in ceramics, which preceded his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University of Art and Design Linz, has formed a central basis of his work since 2010. Clay – often understood as a representative of the earth or the planet as a whole – plays an important role in this.
By thematizing and contextualizing clay, Bartmann emphasizes a relationship with the earth. This is often done through site-specific works or installations that incorporate ceramic or clay objects.
